Iran Threatens Closure Of Gulf If US Reinstates Sanctions
Iran threatens closure of Gulf if US reinstates sanctions. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday backed President Hassan Rouhani’s suggestion that Iran may block Gulf oil exports if its own exports are stopped and said negotiations with the United States would be an “obvious mistake”.
Seems what we have is with the Trump pull out of the Iranian terrible treaty that Obama had ineptly set up, the Iranians now with a bustling economy know that next month the sanctions from the US are slated to go into effect, they are now starting what they always do in such circumstances, threaten the world if they don’t get their way.
Rouhani had earlier this month notified the world that Iran threatens to blockade the Persian gulf if the US moves forward with their sanctions, or the US moved to force other nations to stop purchasing Iranian oil.
“(Khamenei) said remarks by the president … that ‘if Iran’s oil is not exported, no regional country’s oil will be exported,’ were important remarks that reflect the policy and the approach of (Iran’s) system,” Khamenei’s official website said.
Iranian officials have in the past threatened to block the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil shipping route, in retaliation for any hostile U.S. action.
We have seen time after time, when Iran does not get its way, Iran threatens, usually they will resort to threats of blocking the Strait to try to force the world to give into their demands, but the US has equally had as policy now for years, any closure of the Strait will be a red line that will not be allowed to stand.
Iran is bluffing, Putin is a lot of things, stupid is not one of them, if Iran starts to sink ships in the straight or mines it, he knows this is a red line the US and Europe can never allow, nor can the world for that matter, any such move would result in a instant declaration of war, both Iran and their people would suffer for such move.
As counter intuitive as this may seem, if Iran did close down the Strait, Russia would gain from such a move, they would just have to move in a way to allow them to save face, all while reaping profits from oil that would skyrocket in price if such a event would take place. It would also aid him in forcing Iran to pull back to protect themselves, thus cutting short the conflict that they are trying to stir up all over the Middle East. Also, Russia could have this without putting pressure on Iran, leaving them feeling like Russia double crossed them.
While I would prefer peace, I don’t think it should be obtained by giving into threats, nor should our actions be dictated if Russia has a positive outcome from them or not. We for sure should not be doing what the last administration did, make red lines and then not doing anything when they were crossed.
Iran can play a game of chicken with Trump, I promise, unlike Obama, he will not back down when the line is crossed. This in many ways reminds me of Teddy Roosevelt’s Big Stick Policy, or in Teddy’s words, “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” Threats aren’t needed, but the strength to back up what you are trying to implement is.
