Darroch’s Resignation May Have A Severe Impact on International Diplomacy

The resignation of the U.K ambassador for the U.S Kim Darroch following the leakage of diplomatic cable showing that he called President Donald Trump’  incompetent’ could severely impact international diplomacy, experts warned.

Former American diplomat Richard Haas defended the disgraced ambassador, saying it is the nature of an ambassador to give an honest, unbiased assessment.

“He reported as he saw fit, he advised as he saw fit, and he did it on a classified cable. This is what ambassadors are meant to do. He doesn’t do the prime minister or the foreign minister any favors if he doesn’t give his honest take or his honest advice,” said Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations, as The Guardian reported, adding that Darroch could not be blamed for the cable leak.

On Thursday (July 11), Darroch tendered his resignation following the cable leakage that went viral. The diplomatic cable leaked to Mail On Sunday paper slammed the Trump administration and called the White House “clumsy and incompetent’.

Trump hit back by labelling Darroch as “a very stupid guy” and mocking British Prime Minister Theresa May’s handling of Brexit issue ahead of her departure.

Speaking before the British parliament,May, who stepped down as the head of the Conservative Party last June, praised Darroch and blame the leakers.

British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, who is also running for the post as May’ successor, supported Darroch. However, Hunt’s contender for the position, his predecessor Boris Johnson did not back the former ambassador.

“We had a fine diplomat who was just doing what he should have been doing — giving a frank assessment, a personal assessment of the political situation in the country that he was posted (to) — and that’s why I defended him. And I think we all should,”Hunt told reporters.

Who leaked the cable?

The leaked diplomatic telegrams covered periods from 2017 were handed over to Mail on Sunday, as ABC reported.

The Foreign Office has started the investigation to find out the motives behind the classified documents leakage and the culprit.

However, Darroch’s pro-EU stance prompted the leakage and eventually the diplomat’s resignation, according to some speculations. Before serving as the U.K ambassador for the U.S, Darroch was Britain’s permanent representative for Brussels.

The U.K is facing political tension over Brexit and the country is seeking a candidate to replace May as the chief of the Conservative Party.

After Darroch’s departure, there will be speculations that his post will be filled with a pro-Brexit diplomat.

Nigel Farage is a person Trump suggested would do ‘a great job’ as the next ambassador. Farage, the Brexit Party chief and a close friend of the POTUS, urged Darroch to step down following the classified document leakage.

The Mail on Sunday journalist who received the diptel (diplomatic telegrams) Isabel Oakeshott had a close relationship with Farge and other pro-Brexit politicians.

However, she snubbed the allegation that the leakage was a conspiracy to target Darroch.

“This is ludicrous. Like I’ve said, sometimes a great story is just that; not some kind of global conspiracy. MASSIVE eye roll,” she tweeted.

The incident can be a bad precedent too for any diplomats who are meant to provide “unvarnished evaluation’ and the question about how to tackle the leak lingers..

Love this, and have to 100% agree with the article. Ambassadors have to be able to give a frank evaluation of what they think the leadership of a nation they are assigned to, are like. By having this leaked could cause great problems, the fear that such an evaluation could derail your position could easily end up leaving the nation that is providing these people without vital information.
It does not matter what side of the political spectrum you come from, if you agree or don’t with the evaluation, the privacy has to be held close, never revealed to the public, least, what we see now happens.
I think people are pointing the finger at the wrong person, instead of anger shown at this ambassador, we should be demanding that whoever released this, thus shattering the trust given to them, should be brought up on charges and never fill another government job.
