Kaepernick Forces Nike’s Hand, Pulling Betsy Rose Shoes Over Claims Of Racism

Nike, ready to start sales on new sneaker with Betsy Ross Flag on the heel – with the 13 stars representing the original 13 states, yanked shoes off the sales rack after concerns of “racism” of the flag were raised by Colin Kaepernick.

The Air Max 1 USA was intended as a celebration of U.S. Independence Day, with a flag that featured 13 white stars in a circle on the heel. The design was created during the Revolution and is often called the Betsy Ross Flag.
It turns out, anything, the flag, or any of the people from the early days are seen by Kaepernick and others as offensive, this is due to their connection to slavery at the beginning of this nation. When other people started to comment on this on social media, Nike pulled the shoes off the shelf.

According to the Wall Street Journal:

After images of the shoe were posted online, Mr. Kaepernick, a Nike endorser, reached out to company officials saying that he and others felt the Betsy Ross flag is an offensive symbol because of its connection to an era of slavery, the people said. Some users on social media responded to posts about the shoe with similar concerns. Mr. Kaepernick declined to comment…
In 2016, the superintendent of a Michigan school district apologized after students waved the Betsy Ross flag at a high-school football game, saying that for some it is a symbol of white supremacy and nationalism, according to Mlive.com, a local news outlet. While the flag’s use isn’t widespread, the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People said at the time that it had been appropriated by some extremist groups opposed to America’s increasing diversity.

Both Nike and Kaepernick have gotten criticism on social media following this report. Fox News’ Laura Ingraham tweeted, “No more @nike sneakers for our family.”

Others have said if a company becomes so sensitive that it gives rise to control by the fringes, they will no longer buy from them.
